As we are all experiencing the goodness of organic food on our health, the same applies to skincare ingredients as well. Before we dive directly into the topic, let us first explore a little bit about what exactly organic brands mean?
Table of Contents
What is an Organic Brand?
There are many misconceptions about the word ‘Organic’ out there. Many assume that if the food is organic, it is healthy implying less tasty or probably taste like crap.
Keeping the assumptions aside, let’s get to the actual definition of this term.
Organic foods are grown on soil that had no prohibited substances applied three years prior to harvest. Prohibited substances include synthetic fertilizers, harmful pesticides, usage of antibiotics, or hormones.
How Can You Tell if a Product is Organic or Inorganic?
The only guarantee that a product is Organic or natural is by looking at its certification logo. This label means that it has been through strict process of approval by thoroughly examining the product ingredients and standards of manufacturing.
Also note that some small brands do not go with this process so it doesn’t mean they are not organic. But, the best way to identify the product’s genuineness is by having a certified label on it.
Deciphering Organic Product Labels
1. 100% Organic
It means that the product was produced and processed using only organic methods and organic ingredients(exclusive of water and salt). These products do not contain any other prohibited substances or ingredients in them.
Generally, single ingredient products come under this category.
2. Organic
The product was produced with 95% organic ingredients. The rest 5% must be non-GMO. These products may also include the USDA organic certified stamp if they wish. The majority of products come under this category.
3. Made with Organic Ingredients
These products contain between 70 and 95% organic ingredients. The wordings they generally use are “Made with Organic ingredients’. They CANNOT include the USDA organic certification seal on their packages.
4. Natural
This term means that there are no artificial or synthetic ingredients. But, the ingredients are not ‘organic’. Organic products are largely chemical free whereas natural products are usually 50-60% chemical-free.
